That or she was completely unfamiliar with the practice. I'm guessing she had no clue. There was a lot of Catholics in my school and I don't remember any kids coming to school with it. I don't even remember seeing many outside of school with one, plenty of adults though.
I used to go to school with it, no one thought it odd.
The teacher probably lives in somewhat of a religious bubble and didn't know what Ash Wednesday is. It's also not uncommon not to believe a 4th grader, especially these days. He could have been making up a story, trying to get away with something.
Not everyone knows about other people's religious traditions.
Yeah, but this is the religious tradition of the vast majority of Americans.
I still think she needs to be disciplined. Even if she didn't know about it, the child explained it had religious significance and mentioned the First Amendment. At that point, if she's not smart enough to realize she needs to ask some questions and get some more information from the Principal or other administrators, then she's not smart enough to be in a classroom teaching children.
Agreed, the boy tried to explain the significance to her but she didn't want to hear it, that alone makes me think that she shouldn't even be a teacher.
I agree. I find it strange that she has never encountered this, but it's kind of immaterial because she shouldn't have assumed the child was making it up. The answer about the Constitution is disturbing.
really? a 4th-grade public school teacher......there are many politicians and lawyers in government that doesn't know much about the constitution, especially about the 2nd amendment. I had a few college professors who were ignorant about the 2nd amendment.
disturbing is making a national tragedy out of this when the kid received a handwritten apology and candy from his teacher. This should have stayed between the Principal, teacher, and parents.
Catholic student went to school on Ash Wednesday with the ash cross on his forehead. Even after explaining to the teacher what it was for she still grabbed him and washed it off his forehead.
Exactly WHO is "shocked" by this?????
Kids are attacked daily for wearing a Red Hat or showing any support for the USA, the Flag or the President of the United States. Congressional Democrats are attacking the Jewish people for their Religion and Christians are under attack - not just in the Mid East Muslim majority Nations, but in the USA.

William said he received a handwritten apology and candy from his teacher.............you still want to crucify the teacher? Let's make an example out of her? let's drag her name in the news and suspend her for 6 months....better yet, fire her.! she can never work with kids again.
Still today it is the religious tradition of more than 90% of Americans.
Yes, but the liberals hate that fact along with a bunch of other things that make this country what it is. If the left had their way the country would be 90% Muslim.
