America lost the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, doesn't it seem so?
We have been there since October 2001 (after Sept 11, 2001) and March 2003 (wow, 16 years later).
George W. Bush and Dick Cheney created ISIS. We should have never been to Iraq. Saddam Hussein never had weapons of mass destruction.
Barack Obama could have stood up to leaders of Muslim nations who coddle ISIS. He failed in that.
Donald Trump has been very inconsistent in letting Americans know of what is going on with ISIS, terrorism is one of the reasons why he won.
What next? Will we go through another mid-1970s/early 1980s American malaise?
Actually, the USA showed remarkable staying power in Afghanistan. It is not easy for a democracy to sustain what is essentially a guerilla and terrorist war. As you say yourself at one point "wow. 16 years later".
The other point about Afghanistan is that we went in there to root out the Al-Qaeda bases and Osama Bin Laden. I believe that has been successfully done. The problem is that we have not been able to totally defeat the Taliban, allies of Al-Qaeda, but neither has the Taliban been able to take back Afghanistan.
There was never any intent to "win", the longer these wars drag on, the more profitable they become. Pres. Obama ended the debacle known as the invasion of Iraq, after the principal players made their many billions of dollars.
Afghanistan, however, is the enduring revenue stream that is guaranteed income, with nothing close to a victory in sight. Just as planned.
The problem is that we have not been able to totally defeat the Taliban, allies of Al-Qaeda, but neither has the Taliban been able to take back Afghanistan.
The Taliban were not allies of Al Qaeda, the problem is we have an American populace who is grossly misinformed like yourself, and there is little possibility of Americans demanding an end to a "war" in its 18th year.
As long as we have all the infight with the right and left, we will lose every war conflict we get into.america the great, no it not. its at the bottom of the pickle barrel.

The Taliban is more than just a specific group, it is endemic to the culture and religion. The Taliban are practicing, devout Islamists, no more, no less. They are doing as taught in Islam-to murder non-believers, to subject women to degrading, 3rd class status and deny them an education. To abuse children. Our servicemen and women should not be in Afghanistan-or anywhere else in the Middle East. It's not worth the life of ONE American to stop Islamists from killing and brutalizing each other. Bring our men and women home.
Since we never really had war aims or goals in Afghanistan, we can say we accomplished our objectives and won. Bin Laden is dead. In Iraq, we got rid of Saddam...mission accomplished. We stay longer than needed to run up the bill and profits for the greedy. Nevermind the countless deaths and destruction.
