Well, if nothing else, the shoddy treatment has inspired the statehood movement.
“A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced legislation Thursday that would admit Puerto Rico into the union as the 51st state without a referendum on the island's territorial status.”
Nothing against Puerto Ricans but they need to stop acting like they have leverage. They need us more than we need them.
I don't know. They may not produce of anything of value to the United States, but it's still a piece of land that if was under control of say China, Russia or another government that dislikes the US, it could be a prime piece of land to set up a military base and launch missiles towards strategic areas in the USA.
How did that corrupt Island get so far in debt and it become 3rd world in the first place ?
Same way how major US cities go from being prosperous to in serious debt. Politicians promise free stuff to all the poor, and the poor outnumber the rich. And the only way to promise that free stuff is to tax successful businesses and rich people, but those rich people and businesses have the resources to just pack up and move out, and then the city, state, country or whatever that adopted these policies are a lot worse off than they were to begin with.
Trickle down economics doesn't work, but trying to tax the hell out of the rich to pay for lazy people won't work either. Best policy is to make an environment that is business friendly, from mega corporations to a small mom and pop lawn care service. But when you elect politicians that over regulate businesses, only the super rich businesses will be able to keep up with ridiculous regulations while small businesses fold under the pressure.
The fact that regulations and the EPA is being used to extort money from people, it just goes to show those who claim support these regulations and environmental protections acts are just lying, and don't care about either and just want the money that comes with all of these regulations, fees, permits, licenses and other government red tape.

Why? What benefit would a State of Puerto Rico be to the United States? What do they have that we want? And how would it help the cause of national unity to admit a state whose residents' primary language isn't English? (To see how that'll work out, ask Canada how having Quebec in their fold helps with linguistic unity.)
As for the governor's threat, President Trump should take it at face value and stay away for his safety. And he should keep our country's tax dollars away with him.

WRONG-O!! I've wanted to cut Puerto Rico loose long before Mr. Trump ever set eyes on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Why?
Because xenophobes think it’s a bad idea.
Seriously, it’s a beautiful place filled with hard-working people who (would) contribute to the tax base.
It has the only Rain Forest National Park which is very attractive to tourists.
Finally, because the people are already American citizens and should have all of the benefits of same.
Puerto Rico is 70 billion in the crapper.
12% unemployment.
Basic services shutting down.
An average of one doctor per day leaving the island.
No nation will want to touch it with a 10 foot pole.
Time for the people to tighten their belt and come up with
a plan to pay off their debt.
The investors are going nowhere and
are willing to wait a long time to get paid back.
