after China pulled that stunt by adding antifreeze to dog food to falsely raise protein levels so it could be sold

I suspect that the pet food companies put a ton of stuff into pet food that they can never put into human food. Having owned a dog and 2 cats for over 20 years, I also suspect that normal home-produced tinned pet food has stuff in it which kills off our pets early too. It certainly gets them hooked on it. Our cats would not touch anything which was not Whiskas.
China is a huge developing country and as such there are many poor people who will do (almost) anything to make money for their family. There is no state aid for unemployed as there is in many countries of the world.
Expecting first-world behaviour from a third-world country is un-realistic. The large cities here are pretty-much first-world conditions, but the countryside where some of the factories and farms are located still have some way to go. Really, unless you have lived in these places for a while, it is difficult to appreciate what it is like and obviously your expectations are of the high standard you are used to in the USA. :-)
Does it contain ethylene glycol?
Seriously, I highly recommend not consuming chinese products.
They will also manage to get some lead in there too.
