IMO...cops have great fear of the guns that might be in the hands of those that they pull over or have contact with...a well founded fear.
Also, some cops seem to have a misplaced anger when people don't immediately follow their directions or orders....they get insulted and therefore respond in a vengeful way....
But their anger many times causes them to lose their professionalism....leading to cursing, inappropriate treatment of others and outright abuse....especially sad with minor crimes. Others seem to be just bullies in a uniform, with a gun....a dangerous combo.
In my area an officer was caught on body cam throwing a man to the ground and beating him in the head for not responding to his orders.
most of the cop roaches either dont know the laws they are supposed to uphold, or dont care, so in order to try and control the situation, they make things up.
for instance the supreme court has ruled that it is legal to film the police while they are doing their duties in public, and yet far too many officers will tell you that it is illegal to do so, and even try to confiscate the camera/cell phone, and even arrest the camera person, or just threaten them with arrest.
and they will ask for ID, but not tell why they are asking, or they make up stuff like they are "investigating" or the person looks "suspicious" or any number of other things they can make up, like "you match the description of a person we are looking for" or "the car you are driving matches a description". but if you look at the laws of the various states, even the stop and ID states, there is a requirement that for an officer to properly demand to see your ID they MUST have a legal reason. and that must be something like you violated a traffic law, or they have a reasonable suspicsion that you have committed or about to commit or are committing a crime, and they MUST be able to tell you what crime they suspect you of committing.
same thing with a pat down vs going into your pockets. a pat own is allowed for officer safety, if they go into your pockets though, they are violating your fourth amendment rights as it is now an illegal search unless you stupidly gave up your rights and consented to the search. they must have probable cause, or a warrant to search you, they dont need it with a pat down.
too many cops these days go on a power trip when they get that piece of tin thinking they now have power over the people, when in reality they lose power over the people unless the people in question are committing a criminal act.

We have the Patriot Act to thank for police conduct. I cringed when Bush signed it and all my fears have come to pass. People skills are no longer a requirement for cops. Talking and defusing has been replaced by the Tazer, PR 24 and the sidearm. Sap gloves and spring batons are also now part of police interaction with the public for all situations no matter how minor.
Disagree and dissent with a cop and don't do exactly what they say immediately and these tools go into play. Cop authority is not to be questioned.

Well, at least some caught on cam like my post lose their jobs.....the police chief also quit or was forced to resign.

They spend 1/2 a day in 3rd grade on the constitution, in public education.
What benefit would it for government, to keep free people ignorant of their rights?
We are not their property. They are our employee servants and work for us.

Most parents kinda like the idea of their kids surviving police interaction.
There's a whole lot to be said for teaching people to give their name and contact information, then say "I invoke my right to remain silent and I want a lawyer present" - once you're in the station. (Even then, better look properly middle-class.) But if a US police officer in the process of apprehending me looks me in the eye and says "You are now a chicken", I will cluck as politely as can be asked for.
