I always think of people in the 1950s who imagined a commie under every bed.
Can We Please Relax About ‘Socialism’?
Only in America is the word freighted with so much perceived menace
By David Bentley Hart
It may be amusing to hear Republicans assert that a military kleptocracy like Venezuela is a socialist country because its government uses that word when lying about itself (rather in the way that North Korea claims to be a people’s democratic republic). It may make one wince to see Senator Bernie Sanders obliged (as he was on Monday at a town hall hosted by CNN) to explain once more that the totalitarian statism of the Soviet Union had nothing to do with the (far older) tradition of democratic socialist thought....
Well — only in America, as they say. Only here is the word “socialism” freighted with so much perceived menace.
Americans don't read -Allen Dulles
the soviet union itself never attained true socialism except in name only...but the old guard in Russia was more than happy we refereed to them as socialist
I don't think you're going to change people minds on socialism.
The people that think they will get far more than what they will put in, will have some support for these kinds of programs.
The people that will be the ones paying for it, won't.
It's really that simple.
To be honest, I'm not sure anyone changes anyone's mind in this forum. On the other hand, I like to share articles, and the authors are presumably more persuasive than I would be.

Not when "socialism" and other liberal agendas seek to limit individual rights more and more and favor the powers of the central government over those of individual citizens.
When the federal government suddenly becomes better at determining how to rule my life and spend my money than I do, then I will "relax" about socialism.

The real issue here is that the democrats are supporting an agenda so unpopular (Socialism) that writers are jumping in trying to change people's minds.
