(CNN) A federal judge has ordered US Customs and Border Protection to permit health experts into detention facilities holding migrant children to ensure they're "safe and sanitary" and assess the children's medical needs...

Last week, lawyers asked US District Judge Dolly Gee to hold President Donald Trump's administration in contempt and order immediate improvements at the facilities.

The pictures that accompany this story are heart breaking - little kids sleeping outside on bare ground; a Mom and her small child sitting on rocks pebbles and scrunched up to a concrete wall; frightened children spilling out of an impossibly crowded quonset hut.

The humanitarian crisis on our southern borders is both overwhelming and unprecedented:

I am NOT for "open borders" (whatever that's supposed to mean). I am for the prompt and humane processing of asylum seekers. Turn back those who do not qualify for asylum and deal justly with those who do. And do it expeditiously before our southern border becomes completely over-run. Come on, people. The United States is better than this.

For what Trump is paying those private contractors, the place should be the Ritz-Carlton.

It's all about maximum profit. Maybe Trump wants to pay for the Wall by back charging all these people their $1,000 per day "cost" and adding penalties and interest?

You know, like DeSantis just did in Florida to make sure millions of Floridians can't vote?

One must remember that Trump, Bannon and their pals (and MANY Americans) look at these places and figure "the worse, the better". They revel in torture, abuse and such. Really. Hard to imagine but it's true.

Judges are a big part of the problem and many seem to think they are part of the executive branch !!!

Judges think they get their authority from the executive branch to make immigration policy !!!

Last week, lawyers asked US District Judge Dolly Gee to hold President Donald Trump's administration in contempt and order immediate improvements at the facilities. The lawyers are part of a team of doctors and advocates that warned last week of what they said were major health and hygiene problems at Customs and Border Protection facilities in Texas following visits to the facilities.

"Children are held for weeks in deplorable conditions, without access to soap, clean water, showers, clean clothing, toilets, toothbrushes, adequate nutrition or adequate sleep. The children, including infants and expectant mothers, are dirty, cold, hungry and sleep-deprived," the court filing said.

Gee, who sits on the federal bench for the central district of California, made the ruling Friday, despite Attorney General William Barr and other defendants' request that the court "set a schedule for briefing these issues that provides defendants with a full and fair opportunity to respond to the allegations that plaintiffs have lodged against them..."

"The Court has already issued several orders that have set forth in detail what it considers to be violations of the Flores Agreement," Gee wrote in her Friday ruling. "Thus, the parties need not use divining tools to extrapolate from those orders what does or does not constitute non-compliance. The Court has made that clear beyond peradventure."

The humanitarian crisis on our southern borders is both overwhelming and unprecedented:

Dr. Dolly Lucio Sevier, who interviewed 39 children, likened the conditions in the detention centers to "torture facilities," according to a court filing.

"That is, extreme cold temperatures, lights on 24 hours a day, no adequate access to medical care, basic sanitation, water or adequate food," the pediatrician said. "All 39 detainees had no access to hand-washing during their entire time in custody, including no hand-washing available after bathroom use."

At least most of us are better than this. How any "good American" can sit back and do nothing or even make fun of, the people who are suffering down there, especially the children, is unbelievable.

This needs to be corrected NOW.

It is easy to point fingers, any idiot can do that. What is the answer? We immediately turn everyone back? we let everyone in to do what they please? Dems complain about the conditions then don't provide funding to change things, the worse it looks the better for their political viewpoints. So please instead of all the blame game i would love to see a thought out reasoned solution and the laws made to make such a solution possible.

Unfortunately we won't see it, and before someone yells at Trump, Congress makes the laws, any Executive order will be court challenged. The Dems won't do anything but then again the Repubs. didn't either when they had the power. Because thats all that matters to both sides Power.

As soon as the money is available from the bill Congress just passed since that's all that's been preventing improvements in conditions at the border. Remember, until a few short months ago nobody would even admit there was a crisis despite Trump yelling it from the rooftops for 2 years.

People die from being in unsanitary conditions. So glad the judge ordered doctors to go in.
