Five Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps gunboats tried to seize a British oil tanker in the Persian Gulf Wednesday but backed off after a British warship approached, a senior U.S. defense official told Fox News.
The British warship was said to have been less than 5 miles behind the tanker but soon intercepted the Iranian boats and threatened to open fire. A manned U.S. reconnaissance aircraft was above as well, the official said, adding that Iranian forces left without opening fire.
Navy Captain Bill Urban, spokesman for the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), said the military was aware of the reported actions. He added, “Threats to international freedom of navigation require an international solution. The world economy depends on the free flow of commerce, and it is incumbent on all nations to protect and preserve this lynchpin of global prosperity.”
Iranian gun boats harassing shipping in the Gulf? I would never have guessed that Iran would do that.
Oh wait, yes they do have a history of such use of their pathetic gunboats. The Brits should have sank a few.
Iran is in no position for conflict... If this is all the UK does, Iran will capture one of their vessels ..
Iran is trying to start something in order to give others a reason to help them out.
The sanctions are working. You are right in saying they are in no position for conflict. But they are not in a position to sit there, do nothing, and let the sanctions continue. They are trying to stir the pot.
They want to stir the pot enough to get noticed... but they don't want to overdo it to the point where they will deserve annihilation.
Iran no doubt is praising their great victory in their internal media as we speak and had no intention of doing anything.
Come on now, they're not stupid, they're going to know that there was a brit warship around there.
... and if the Brit warship guns them down, then what happens? What do Iranian leaders say? How does it change their spin to say the Europeans and Americans shot them down?
