HW Bush and Jimmy Carter were both popular and well-liked, but were voted out--both had bad economies. GW Bush's economy was so bad it defeated McCain, as well.
I think Americans who stayed home in 2016 learned their lesson not to be apathetic. This is what you get.

You do realize that in your imagined depression there won't be any money to pay for it because the rich won't be rich anymore.
More like kicking out the person responsible for the depression. Unlike the last recession which was a culmination of factors that had been building for decades, this one will be solely the fault of Donald Trump.

Herbert Hoover was a one-term President and he was replaced by somebody who today would be considered a far-left crazy socialist.

Mistakes happen. Biden mistakenly said Houston instead of El Paso.

Once you do that, we'll have a discussion.
Polls show each Democratic candidate winning against Trump.

Honestly, national polls are meaningless. Can't trust them. They had Clinton winning. As we saw, she won the popular vote but the real measure would be to poll the swing states -- and we don't know really which states will serve as those swing states in 2020, do we?

Polls made assumptions about voter turnout that were in hindsight wrong.

In real-time, I knew that was a concern because that election was like no other - 2 quite disliked candidates. Hard to predict voter turnout.

It would be hard to find a democratic candidate as disliked as Clinton, and democratic turnout will be higher than last time. Harder to gauge Republican turnout vs 2016, but since it was higher less likely it will go up further.

And I doubt people in the mushy middle 20% of swing voters will vote in the same proportion for Trump.

Many things can change in a year though.

Democrats handed DT (or more to point GOP) 2016 election on a silver platter.

Nearly everyone in DNC knew that the Clintons, especially Hillary Clinton was toxic with very high negatives. But it was felt the party owed her after Obama came out of nowhere and won in 2008. So decks were cleared and the dog and pony show that was Hillary Clinton's WH run began.

The Clintons and DNC thought they had things in the bag when GOP nominated DT, never in a million years believing the orange headed buffoon would actually win. Thus HC and DNC made some serious mistakes and miscalculations.

Concentrating on the elite liberal/democrat areas of north east and west coast, and mostly ignoring "fly over" states including the rust belt didn't do HC any favors.

Whatever greatness is attached to Bill Clinton, his missus is seen as a scheming, conniving, carpet bagging, high riding b**th.

Answer: No, he barely managed to get elected as it stands against perhaps the worst (from a strategic viewpoint) candidate the dems have ever ran.

Can Trump still be re-elected against the backdrop of a severe recession/depression?
