Norway is increasingly seen as the envy of the world. It is FIRST place in the world happiness index. It is #5 in median income (U.S. is behind at #8). It has a debt-to-GDP ratio of -90.5 percent. In other words it has a national surplus, not a national debt.
Norway has obviously made a lot of good decisions. Now they are making another good decision by banning the sale of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles by 2025. Not the 2030 plan of Gov. Jay Inslee, which was seen as way too ambitious and radical but 2025.
Can someone please explain to me why we are not following Norway's lead????
Good decision, we urgently need bold decisions, even if they hurt in the short run.
I suppose Norway has no car industry. That at least makes them credible. Most European countries unfortunately have car manufacturers, so don't expect Germany or France to follow suit...
I'd love a Model 3. I can't afford one. Most of the other entry level electric cars have way too short of a range to be practical or are otherwise inferior to standard ICE cars.
The bottom line is that Americans aren't rich enough to afford nice electric cars.

All I see around here are $60k plus SUV's and pickups... seems to me like the moneys there.

I can see Germany fighting this. They have a thriving export business in cars - non-electric cars.
Norway happened to be a very small country with lots of oil. They only have 5.3 million people and their sovereign wealth fund is over a trillion dollars gained from oil revenue. Technically I don't think Norwegians even have to have an economy or "work" if they wanted to, since all of them can just live off of interest from their oil revenue...
Imagine if the US oil revenue was $62 trillion dollars, for sure we could follow Norway's lead.
This is false. On emissions, the US may be doing less than the EU, but we are doing a lot more than Canada, Australia, Japan or any other developed country. Texas is one of the leaders in renewables, with almost 20% of total electricity generated from wind and solar last year. Total CO2 emissions in the United States are about to fall below our levels from the 1990, despite US having 80 million more people. We have tremendous gains in reducing emissions per capita, or emissions per $ GDP metrics. Just because we didn't sign the Paris Accords or any other piece of UN toilet paper that literally every single other country violates, doesn't mean we are not doing anything. Look at the actual stats.
Did I say anything about Canada, Australia or Japan? No, I didn't. I said the EU. I still maintain we are bought and paid for my the fossil fuel industry. Along with big pharma, et al.
Norway was one of the richest countries in the world, pr capita before we found oil.
Scandinavia in general has been at the top for the last 2 centuries.
We also had and have a lot of cutting edge tech companies.
10 min from where I grew up, the worlds first industrial robot was developed in in 1964. In the 1980s the same company from my small municipal controlled 50% of the worlds automated surface treating robotic arms. (Think painting, welding and moving arms). Most of ABBs robotics is derived from that small company.
Its true big Oil sucked most of the capital and we kind of divested in Onshore production for Offshore production.
We are also the second largest fish and seafood exporter in the world.
Its not like we dont have a way out of Big oil when the time comes.
We just invest in our people, education and healthcare... we work together and not on our own, and get better outcomes.
Big oil will still be big without the oil because they've got the $$$. Look up who owns a lot of the newer battery patents. If countries move away from oil those companies are still going to be on top with the money to work in other markets.
Tell me about it, the Portuguese import their national dish - codfish - mostly from Norway, which is weird when you think about it
Yeah.. my nearest city is the largest producer in Norway.
