This is something I don't understand about Medicaid. Apparently, you can keep your own home if you live in it. But as I understand it, you can't have more than $2,000 in savings to qualify for Medicaid. So how do you pay your property taxes, utilities, and upkeep of the house if your can't accumulate some savings? This is not a comment, I'm just wondering if anyone understands how this would work if the couple had paid off their house over the years, had no mortgage, but was very low income.
A reverse mortgage I suppose.
How does a Medicaid pauperization work? It's the kind of thing we could all stand to understand. My guess is that a house, car, personal possessions are protected...which tells me that people tend to pay off houses, buy cars, etc. when their spouse is going down that road.
I have a rough idea what people do in terms of buying an annuity when they are trying to qualify a spouse for Medicaid, but I'm not sure what an optimal strategy would be for a single person. Maybe a partial answer is to hide some physical cash/gold somewhere.

Unless you have a religious belief system that is four square against allowing other people to end their lives, I can't see how left/right politics even enters into it.
Personally, I think it's downright evil to not allow people to bring everything to a close with some panache. It's the only thing you really own after all.

A church in DeLand, Florida raised enough money to pay off the medical debt of 6,500 people in 5 counties in Central Florida. In addition, they are able to support 3 foster homes for a year.
They died at 76 and 77, which is decades longer than I expect to live.
