How is this hard to understand. If everyone is getting an education, everyone is paying taxes. If everyone is getting health care, the treatments become less expensive and people don't lose their homes to cancer. Why is this hard to understand? It's why people who reach 65 act like they "made it" because they can then go on Medicare. If everyone is paying in, everyone has a higher standard of living. Ask Denmark. Ask Canada, Ask Australia.

No, if everyone is getting an education paid for by taxes, everyone's taxes go up to pay for it. And the price goes up. Same thing with healthcare, unless you regulate the price and reduce the quality.

Why does Canada have such strict immigration laws?

Why are Scandinavian Americans wealthier and live longer than Scandinavians?

Why did the Soviet Union fail?

How did Hong Kong succeed when Red China did not?

Weren’t all your examples relatively successful nations before they adopted the welfare state?

Successful nations are not the product of welfare states. Welfare states require successful capitalism to tax.

We’ve kinda argued this point, especially healthcare. The burden on businesses to pay for the logistics to provide healthcare would be eliminated, and if a government provided healthcare system was adequate- labor down time would be reduced.

However the caveat is ‘if’ the US government is capable of that. And that’s a ‘YUGE’ if.

So far I've learned in this thread that:

. Montana is better than West Virginia
. West Virginia would be just like Denmark if they became socialists and got free healthcare and college.

I'm glad that's settled.

West Virginia gets a lot of free healthcare and federally funded retraining. They take the health care and the welfare/Disability but when it comes to retraining, apparently one can lead a horse to water but one can't make them drink.

Denmark doesn't have that problem.

Exactly. Socialism makes everywhere the best.

Prosperity is based on prodigious production of surplus usable goods and services, equitably traded and enjoyed. Low cost transportation aids in the process. Climate and geography are important factors, since mountainous areas have higher costs, and climate issues (snow, ice, landslides, etc). All that can be modified by government penalties (taxes) and subsidies (bribes).

Europe has an advantage in electric traction rail, thus doesn't waste as much fuel for land transportation as do the united States.
Compare Denmark to the Tidewater in Virginia, and you'll see comparative prosperity and industry.

But the bell of doom is tolling for "happy" Denmark: 1.71 births per woman (2016)
U.S. birthrate : 1.80 births per woman (2016) (all time low! Need 2.0 for replacement)

The birth rate in Kentucky in 2016 was 65.4 per 1,000 women ages 15-44.
The birth rate in W. Virginia in 2016 was 58 per 1,000 women ages 15-44.

“The Danish welfare system is under pressure. There are still not enough babies being born, despite a little progress. And this concerns us all."

Socialism collapses when it runs out of other people's children to tax.
Before socialism, security in old age was dependent upon one's family (children) or private charity. So families were large, and Europe exported its surplus population to colonies around the globe. After socialism, people stopped having large families, partly due to the higher cost and the fact that both parents had to work to pay all the socialist overhead expenses. Socialism is genocidal in the long run and will destroy any nation it infests.

Ironically, socialist Europe is importing surplus population from non-socialist countries with incompatible cultures. That won't end well.

Actually I live two hours from Canada and the quality is known to be excellent. So excellent that people travel there for it. And my friend in Denmark has experienced both American and Danish health care and says theirs is excellent, so good that it is reason number 10,000 why she decided to stay there.

This whole "quality" argument is silly. There are good and bad doctors. Insurance companies already approve and deny coverage. The arguments are simply a reflexive response by the GOP because they hate the government unless they are personally benefitting from the government. In a country like Denmark, everyone contributes and everyone benefits. In a place like WV and KY, we contribute, they benefit. It's that simple.

Actually the inverse is true.

West Virginia receives welfare at a grossly disproportionate rate (Socialism) and their GDP per capita is nowhere near Denmark.
