A Florida mom was outraged after her 9-year-old daughter's school allegedly asked her to cover up because her tank top "distracts” boys. However, instead of complaining about the dress code, she and other students performed a peaceful protest.
The problem isn't the dress code, it's the explanation. If tank tops are not allowed then they aren't- and hopefully it applies to both boys and girls. The explanation of "because it causes distractions for boys" is not a good explanation. Boy's behavior is not based on how girls dress. Boys are just as capable of self control as girls are. If some individuals struggle with that then it's time to learn.
All this nonsense could be stopped by requiring a uniform or dress code.
My niece has just been enrolled in a parochial school and she now has a uniform. Last year it was always a struggle to decide what to wear and if it was cool or not etc etc.. and there will be no more wear your pajamas to school day and other such nonsense. School should be for learning, it is not a fashion show.
Cute story, nice to see a heartwarming story coming out of Florida when they're so often overlooked for the sensational stories that constantly come out of there due to their large population and homeless\drug situtation.

Yeah, a lot of wacky stuff goes in Florida. It isn't necessarily native Floridians though. Tons of transplants from all over the country and people on the run there.

^^^^^^This. Public Schools should have uniforms. We had a pretty strict dress code when I went to school, and it was enforced.

Agreed. The explanation given by the school tells boys they can’t control their own behavior while simultaneously blaming how a girl dresses for the treatment she receives.

You may have a good point, but that would go to how these boys are being raised at home. In the meanwhile, what is the school supposed to do? Allow a major distraction to continue when there's an easy fix to it
Also, fundamentally, I'm not sure I disagree with the reasoning. If an outfit is inappropriate and reveals body parts that should remain private in a school setting, it may very well be perfectly reasonable for people to be distracted by it. The same would (or should) go for boys who wore something similar.
