Yeah, sure dude, conservatives say that. And, of course the only salvation for a guilty feeling White or Christian is to join the Democrat party

So when Michelle Bachman (running for POTUS?) comes out and supports a major Religious Figure who tells us all that this was NOT a "dark period" but a good Christian indication of an enlightened world...and this is in the current Century, we should think to ourselves "Oh, that was 100's of years ago?".......

The point is - if the South didn't still contain millions who believe in the Lost Cause...and if many "conservatives" from elsewhere didn't identify with them, we WOULD have moved on 150 years ago.

I'm not sure how well read you are but things were going quite well for 6-10 years after the Civil War - blacks were being elected, etc......then came 150 years of manipulation, violence, Jim Crow and more.

I'd agree with you if, like Germany and Japan, the South had accepted that in the scheme of history they were wrong...and moved on. But they didn't. So it's still in the news.

Maybe not your fault or mine...but you should address your critiques to those who still practice voter suppression and are spreading the ideas that Slaves had it good, etc.

No, the solution is usually to be an independent (the largest political party by far) and to denounce any and all attempts to roll back history and progress.

3000 years of the Institution of Slavery and all we have to talk about is the last 150 years of it. In not wanting to discuss the ancients and how it all became as it was, is the reason most folks have no understanding and from what I get, they don't want to understand it, but point fingers instead.

Debtors' prison, of the ancients, many sold themselves into slavery in order to have their tax debts paid ... then later it morphed, into those who were barbaric in nature, kidnapped people and sold them into slavery ... then the African Lords ... this discussion just gets crazier from there.

Oh the stigma of it all ...

Truth be told there isn't one person a live today that does not have an ancestor who at one time served as a slave in service to a master. That's it.

The USA has always been the most "self aware" nation since it's required by our Constitution and our system of government. That doesn't mean everyone and everything is perfect, right out of the gate or forever, but there isn't a better place for anyone be. We have nothing to apologize for since correcting the wrongs that need correcting, often with our own blood, says it all. To deny that, and our history which is full of examples of that, is ridiculous.

True, but Americans, and whites, and Christians specifically, were the worst slavers in history, and Reparations must be paid

So is 1964 the date you think we finally corrected...or is that just the legislation that then took decades to come to actual pass?

"Americans, and whites, and Christians specifically, were the worst slavers in history.." Can you show some evidence that's true? Or show where anyone on this thread has said that. Otherwise the statement sounds like a deflection.

My Nana was a "slave". She was an indentured servant. She freely "sold herself" in order to come to The United States.

Give me a break. If anyone should pay, it's the Portuguese who first sold slaves.

Given the way things are now, I think it's time to give up the reparation schtick. More freeloading.
