Those who favor this bill cite reasoning of how these immigrants work and pay taxes but just aren't allowed social security. They say it will improve public safety by forcing these people who may already be on the roads to be required to take driving test. They say because the federal immigration system is broken this will help those trying to survive better for those to get to work. They say this will not provide a path to gain citizenship and to vote. SUpporters say this is the morally correct direction to take.

This is for a standard driver's license and not for the newer REAL ID.

What are your thoughts? Personally being from Massachusetts my entire life, this bill doesn't excite me. If you have not been granted by all legal channels the right to be here in this country, then you should not be afforded luxuries that citizens have state to state. I almost feel it's a rogue action by Massachusetts. Undocumented immigrants do not have legal status, so why give them state level status.

The same argument the politicians here in Ca, gave to give illegals a driver's license.
The only thing I see since they were given this privilege, is the rise in hit and run accidents, and people getting killed by hit and run drivers.
Obviously these illegals will not stop, because they fear deportation.

Bob.

Quote:
"People that have gotten licenses ... [are] trained right, so it has made the roads safer," said Grasso, a former police sergeant who works with local police on crash investigations.

Statewide, hit-and-run crashes dropped 9% between 2016 and 2018.

Across 10 Connecticut cities with the highest concentrations of Drive Only licenses issued to undocumented immigrants, hit-and-run crashes fell by 15% in the same time period, according to state data obtained by the New England Center for Investigative Reporting. The state didn't compile hit-and-run crash data before 2015.

Grasso said undocumented immigrant drivers are confident they won't be charged with unlicensed driving and are less likely to flee a crash.
"The feedback I'm getting is that the licenses are keeping people at the scene because they know that they have a driver's license now," he said.

Bob.

What are you talking about?!

Illegals have been driving without licenses in CA for as long as there are cars and illegals! The one difference it makes is that now they can buy insurance so they have coverage in case they hit you.

Illegals do not need to be in New England. Most labor jobs are seasonal. My associates who employ laborers use Americans and seasonal guest workers, not illegals.

You better tell that to all the Irish plasterers, Dominican landscapers, and Brazilian house cleaners in New England that overstayed their visas.

In Florida Illegals drive without a license anyway. Seems giving a drivers license would make them documented in some way.

Might as well do it because no drivers license does nothing nor works as a deterrent. Just look at Florida's car insurance rates.
