Yale Daily News - For senior, abortion a medium for art, political discourse (broken link)

Quote:
Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself "as often as possible" while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.
Wasn't sure exactly where to post this, thought this would be the best forum. Whatever your religious/moral, or ethical beliefs, this has got to strike a chord with you. I think she's crossed the line from 'art' to 'ethically corrupt' myself, and I'm not a religious person. Yes it is her body, she can do what she wants to it, etc, but this is just sick. How anyone could interpret this as art is boggling. This woman seems to think she's on some crusade of sorts, and is only proud to discuss it and bring attention to it. I hope she earns no praise for this and learns a hard lesson about what art isn't.

Her very existence would seem to be a strong argument for abortion.

"The goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body."

Couldn't she have used paint and made some of those cute handprints?

Regardless of stance on abortion, this is sick.

That is horrific and deeply disturbing. Surely those who are pro-choice would agree that the "intent" of having legal abortion is not to intentionally get pregnant only to abort.

Beyond disgusting...
And she is lying about these herbs being completely safe..
Can't believe that anyone would allow her to display something so tasteless and disturbing.

Wierd, but I've seen alot of other wierd stuff too. Not sure it's art, but has nothing to do with the abortion debate. If I took a crap and painted walls with crap, I'm not sure that would be art either.
