You seem to be struggling with how to interpret a research manuscript. You are conflating the methods of cited past research with the results of the current research. Research manuscripts of current research typically cite past studies. I can't explain it any clearer than that.
What you provided is clearly talking about prior research, so is it using the prior data or not?

If it's not, then why is that data provided?
All good research manuscripts provide information about prior related studies and how/why their research will be different/improved. It is up to the reader to interpret this information.
As for you, you can't seem to get beyond a 2004 study done by phone that was described/cited by the 2015 research.
