I don't like to play Monday morning quarterback, as we really don't know for sure what he was dealing with. However, I wouldn't leave the safety of my home to engage criminals outside. That is what 911 is for. Now, if they actually enter your home, different story. Obviously, this guy thought they were a legitimate threat to him and his family so thought it worth it to go outside.
From what I HEARD on the radio (which is NOT substantiated as fact), the homeowner was in his yard when the three tried to rob, at gunpoint, the homeowner and at least one other person. The perp with the gun fired first.
So, assuming this is correct information, if you were in your yard, and happened to be armed, and had a gun pointed at you by a masked assailant, you'd call 911?

I'm not sure the gunman would allow that.
In California, the HO would be charged for defending themselves.
No one will never know exactly what happened, since all witnesses were killed, but the shooter will probably not be charged.
All the witnesses weren't killed. Per this article, the homeowner and 2 others were standing outside together in front of the home at 4AM. The 2 others that were with the shooter/homeowner are witnesses.
The boys allegedly approached the residence and attempted to rob three people in the front yard, according to the sheriff’s spokesman. One of the attempted robbery suspects brandished a gun and fired at the residents before the homeowner returned fire.
...
None of the victims in the attempted robbery were injured.

Strangely no mention yet of ethnicity in this case.
And no involvment yet of Black Lives Matter or any sign of any race riots so I'm guessing the homeowner and victims are all black.
Life,eh ?
