Wonder if the HUGE demand for food and fuel has anything to do with prices skyrocketing. Some of us pay for food. Others get foodstamps. The ones with these pay little or no attention to prices. Just wondered what your thoughts were. And, the more we pay the higher it gets. No end to this mess.

Global population affecting food prices? Yes. US population, not really.
Foodstamps inflationary effects on food prices would have to be very, very small indeed.
If you want to blame anybody, blame the fact that the Chinese have discovered a huge appetite for pork in recent years. China is now the world's largest pork consumer. Pigs eat the same food that humans do, so the more pigs you raise the more grain prices go up. In the US, you can blame ethanol and the declining value of a dollar.

The population of the USA has more than doubled in just a few decades, mainly due to massive immigration. Obviously we're having to get much more oil but also the huge population growth is destroying much land that was previously used for farming. Farmland is disappearing fast, with millions of people moving in every year, they have to live somewhere.
The cost of food has everything to do with inflation. Our dollar is worth nothing. The food price is matching your dollar value. The dollar of 1913 is now worth 4 cents. Look to the Federal Reserve System and 9 trillion in debt and you will have some answers to your food crisis and energy crisis. All planned inflation with the assistance of Bankers and Government.
And don't forget the Ethanol trend..corn syrup is found in a lot of things, and farmers shift from potatoes, tomatoes etc. to grow corn for fuel. That leaves less food for humans and livestock (which need corn and hay to get fat for market or give milk) and the cost rises. Tack on gas prices and inflation...don't expect the prices to go down anytime soon.
What about farms turning into subdivisions? Am I the only one who worries that some day we'll be relying on Kazakstan and the Ukraine for grains, and it will be a similar scenario with the Middle East and oil? Isn't this part of the recent wheat price spike??
This is true and many "in the know" are worried because the US is actually a net food importer now. Alot of this food is exotic food like bananas, fruits, or lettuce- not staple foods, but we are now a net food importer nontheless. For every 3 dollars of grain the US exports, we import 2 dollars, and the US imports more beef than we export.

From what I've been reading, a lot of the price increase on food is related to our poor attempts at alternative fuel sources (like corn based fuel etc). Something as little as removing corn from the market to use as fuel, raises the price of various things that eat corn.
Obviously this is not the cause of the problem, but just one little snippet of whats going on.
