Do you think it's wrong for the government to hide anything? Take Area 51 for example, do you think it's wrong they keep it a secret to hide anything they do there from us?

There will always be an argument over where "the line" is but I think it is both necessary and acceotable for some activities of the government to remain confidential. To take probably the most obvious example, techniques used in intelligence activities and other information that could compromise national security if known publicly should be kept confidential. It does not help the American public if our enemies knows everything about us and there is no way to let information be known to law-abiding American citizens as a while without it also being known to our enemies.

Sometimes they have to for national security. Sometimes also for the safety of individuals.

1.) It's June 1, 1944. D-day is set for sometime this week. The govt knows when and where, of course, but the Germans don't. Is it wrong for the U.S. govt to hide this information from the public?

2.) It's Oct. 26, 2019. American Special Forces troops are zeroing in on ISIS's leader in Syria. Again the U.S. govt knows when and where the mission is going, but ISIS doesn't. Is it wrong for the U.S. govt to hide this information from the public?

No. The majority of US citizens would not want Kim Jung Un or ISIS to know everything the government is doing. There will always be some portion of government activities that should remain confidential or our national security will be compromised.

Are portions of the government keeping things secret to protect their own power intact? Absolutely. Is that right? No. But the question was one of absolutes. and there are circumstances in which the governments activities should be kept confidential. To have absolutely everything public is ineffective and dangerous. That doesn't mean I agree that everything that is being kept under wraps should be.

For National Security reasons on an eminent threat, yes. That's about it.

Audit the Fed. We would have never known that Barclays, a non American bank, was bailed out to the tune of almost 1 trillion dollars. Granted not many care.
