The unitary executive theory (UTE) has always been controversial and open to interpretation from the days of the founding fathers to the present.
Trump is far from being the first president* to claim that he can do as he pleases because the UTE allows him to. The most infamous example of a President playing lone gunslinger and citing UTE as an excuse back in 2001 was Bush II with the backing of Dick Cheney and Justice Scalia.
The application of this legal doctrine is responsible for the the war on terror, including the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Look Mom - no WMDs! And let's not forget the use of enhanced interrogation techniques at sites like Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib, and mass surveillance.
Gosh, why on earth would ANYONE be opposed to an interpretation of Presidential power which when given free rein, led to the unnecessary deaths of 5,000 US servicemen in Iraq alone in a fruitless quest to find Saddam's WMDs which turned out to be imaginary. And that was just for starters. I especially like the use of torture so extreme that it flies in the face of the Geneva Conventions and the idea of mass surveillance. Thanks, GOP.

The guy is out of line. His position as head of the Justice Department must by it's very nature be non-partisan. He is a servant of the people (well, that was the original idea ).
No doubt, he did this to ameliorate his relationship with Trump, which has been strained since he refused to publicly declare Trump did nothing illegal in the Ukraine fiasco.

I was not there. All I know is Epstein reportedly attempted suicide in July and reportedly achieved his objective in August, while in Federal custody, under the DOJ.
There was never any certainty Epstein would testify or be honest, if he did.
Nonetheless, he could have named anyone.
Yet, Epstein himself reported through his attorney, his cell mate beat the crap out of him and tried to strangle him.
