I disagree. I think relatively FEW Americans have Native Indian blood regardless of how long their families have been here.

African Americans can all trace their families to before 1808...we ended our participation in the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade that year. However, only a tiny few blacks have Indian blood. Fairer skinned blacks have always claimed Indian heritage, but the truth is that the admixture was regular old white folks. We as black folks just don’t want that to be the case because we find it so abhorrent.

Same for whites...I disbelieve just about every white person who makes claims of Indian heritage. I don’t know what that obsession is about, but they’re lying like rugs.

Fact is, Americans were too busy killing off Indians to be procreating with them. Facts.

It is true that probably most family (black or white) stories of NA ancestors are not true. However, whites and blacks and Native Americans did intermarry. Even when that did happen it might not be possible to prove it with DNA. You do not carry bits of DNA from every ancestor you ever had, and the more generations you go back the more likely it is that you have none from any given ancestor. Also, Native Americans are underrepresented in DNA databases. Therefore, DNA cannot be used to exclude a particular ancestral ethnicity.

From data at 23AndMe:

https://www.cell.com/ajhg/fulltext/S...4)00476-5#sec2

"Though mean estimates of Native American ancestry are low, many African Americans carry detectable levels of Native American ancestry. Consistent with historical narratives and family histories, our estimate suggests that one in every five African Americans carries Native American ancestry, a higher rate than we detected in self-reported European Americans."

"Our estimated rates of non-European ancestry in European Americans suggest that more than six million Americans, who self-identify as European, might carry African ancestry. Likewise, as many as five million Americans who self-identify as European might have at least 1% Native American ancestry. Louisiana’s high levels of African ancestry in European Americans are consistent with historical accounts of intermarriage in the New Orleans area."

Lol...that bottom paragraph might be problematic for some people. Be careful!

People might wonder how much of their blood needs to be a certain ethnicity to be considered as such for both practical and perhaps even legal purposes. Personally, I think at least 10% is of an ethnicity is significant enough. However, to be eligible for things like benefits or to be really considered that ethnicity, at least one-fifth to one-quarter of your blood being that ethnicity might fly more.

Since we are doing a thread that is somewhat genetic/hereditary-related, I mention mine :I am 25% Danish on Dad's side and 25% Mexican on Mom's side but I don't really consider myself as such. Those 2 have the highest percentages of my various ethnicities blood wise. With both ethnicities being so low on some job applications, I often ID as "Non-Hispanic White" on job applications. Is that technically lying? Perhaps.

You might be surprised at how often it is not a problem, judging by responses on genealogy sites.

Can Black people or people mixed with Black be classified as Native Americans? I think they can and some are.

Native Americans are a mixed group. Today not all people who are Native American are pure bloods. So you're likely to see Native Americans with white and black mixtures. So more people need to expand in their minds on what a Native American can look like. Look at the Shinnecock tribe of Long Island NY. They have a significant black mixture. So does a North Carolina tribe, the Haliwa Saponi tribe.

Thank you for stating this. I was about to respond. This talking point is way overblown. There wasn’t excessive mixing with native Americans on any level in this country. Hispanics coming from south of the border on average have way higher Amerindian blood than the average native born American, regardless of how long their family has been in this country.

I don't know about every tribe but I've seen many white looking Cherokee people.

Various tribes have a wide range of reputations for allowing people to be included on the rolls of membership.

Some of them are ruthless about purging rolls in order to divide the pot of casino and other income among fewer people.

I’ve never understood the romanticism of wanting to be part Indian. Black folks used to have that affliction real bad.

I’m happy to be descended from African Hunter/Gatherers. That’s good enough for me. Don’t wanna add to it. Lol
