I dont think a scumbag from Detroit with a gun shooting up a Hookah Lounge would be at all unusual in this "overwhelmingly European" city (whatever that means)

West Virginia has alot of problems. We can't lie about that. It has alot of issues in terms of health, poverty, drug abuse, etc. Some underclass idiot from Detroit won't stand out as much as the OP might want to believe. The only thing that would stand out is race, and Huntington,WV is 8% Black. It isn't like there aren't Black people in Huntington.
West Virginia has been ravaged by alot of internal problems. The idea of "if there were no Democrats around WV would be a paradise" it is a joke. And in this case, it's really just a dog whistle.
Think about this. This thread didn't pop up until the killer was identified. When it was seen that it was a Black man from Detroit, this thread arrived, and was called "a hate crime". It was really a dog whistle for "this is what happens when Blacks come to your town". Talking about "we need to pull over people with Michigan plates". We all know that violates the 4th amendment.
Huntington is in an area known for drug problems, and alot of those drugs are coming from Ohio and Michigan. This was not a hate crime. It was a violent crime possibly related to drugs.
It is amazing how this hate crime could have prevented if the police would have pulled him over based on his Michigan license plates being in West Virginia.
LMAO "Hate Crime against White Appalachian cities: " beautiful, absolutely beautiful title.

For once we agree on something. I knew this was a joke when I saw the title. From reading the article, it's more likely that drugs played a bigger role.

Exactly. I don’t like all the people from Texas moving to Seattle (second largest contributor to our growth after California but it keeps getting bluer). Since we prefer Californians over Texans, should we have police pull over the Texans? Because I didn’t realize that was an option.
15% of West Virginia is on Disability - the highest in the country. Taxpayers are now paying the coal miner’s private pension. It’s an absolute disaster of a state and it’s not because some guy from Detroit had a dispute with a guy in a bar.
Wait - isn't this about the high opiate and violence and vehicle death rates in WV and all that kind of stuff?
Sensational when some murder occurs but hardly hits the news when millions of opiate pills are shipped to a town with 4,000 residents....or when we realize:
"Huntington West Virginia has some of the worst heroin addiction rates in the country, and Huntington leads the state in the number of heroin overdoses"

This is how I see it. People have a right to live where they want to live, move where they want to move to. Trying to stop others from moving to a certain place because of what state they are from is a crime in itself. Pulling over people for simply being from a different state violent the 4th Amendment.
It is like I've said before, West Virginia has alot of problems. While that shooting by a Detroit native added to it, alot of the state's issues are internal. The coal industry has been in decline for awhile. Parts of West Virginia bear resemblance to the rust belt cities because manufacturing has declined. Huntington, where the shooting took place, peaked at 86,353 people in 1950. Today it barely has 46,000 people, and dropping. Huntington's economy was based on steel processing and manufacturing. When the steel industry collapsed in Huntington, the city lost alot of jobs and went into deep decline. WV has had issues with drug addiction for years. Before heroin got to WV, it was pills and meth.

What are we doing to stop that problem?
The opiates themselves are a big part of why that shooting occurred. Heroin was being sold at that bar. And the heroin is the smaller part of a larger drug problem in WV.
Huntington used to a steel producing center in West Virginia. Now its economy has decline and drug addiction is a major issue. That shooting is a symptom of it.

But, it was still an African-American who committed this mass shooting.

Quit making excuses for him.
Please provide interpretation for what that is supposed to mean. A white guy committed the deadliest shooting in U.S. history, killing 58 people over no disagreement whatsoever - just because. Is that meaningful?
