Be honest, the herd that's running is pretty questionable. Not questionable enough to make me vote for Trump, but bad enough only 1 or 2 are worthy of any kind of consideration.
You're right in that removal from office does not imply that laws have to be broken - but it's kind of a reasonable standard to have - especially since impeachment should be a rare animal.
But this was totally unnecessary.
1- He didn't do what they accused him of.
2- It's a jaywalking offense or a speeding ticket and not worthy of all of this.
3- Biden did what they accused Trump of - and was much more direct about it.
The swamp is the guy in the white house and his corruption spread to the GOP. Yesterday's poll: Biden 49, Trump 40. Good luck in the fall Trumpers!
The swamp is being drained and the guy in the White House is still there. Biden no doubt will be otherwise occupied with sonny and won't even run.

This trial is about upholding the Constitution as the main goal.
A secondary goal would be to expose Republican corruption for everyone to see.
Both have been accomplished with or without removing Trump.

In other words, Trump must have said to Republican Senate members, "Vote to remove me, and I will expose all of your secret dirty laundry to the word." Voters in November should have the good sense to remove the corruption.

The ONLY good thing Trump has done is expose the depths of the corruption of the republican party. It goes SO MUCH deeper than I ever imagined.
