So you are against the balanced budget amendment then?

Yes. That's not the same as being against a balanced budget, however.

THE AMENDMENT WOULD FORCE POLICYMAKERS TO CUT FEDERAL PROGRAMS, RAISE TAXES, OR BOTH WHEN THE ECONOMY IS WEAK OR ALREADY IN RECESSION — THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT GOOD ECONOMIC POLICY WOULD ADVISE.

Of course, the problem is we are not a family (at least not a functional family).

Benjamin Franklin is credited for saying, “When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”

This is where we are.

Then you are for continued run-up of debt, because the BBA is the only thing that would force us to get our finances in order. The politicians will never do it.

And eventually, the country is going to collapse. Maybe not on our watch, maybe not on our kids watch, but eventually, the debt is going to really hurt us.

False choice, IMO.

Politicians can do it if they choose. They will choose to do it if it becomes a high-enough-profile issue with voters.

+ 1

Most things including the nation's fiscal insanity are bipartisan.

Trump is not touting a balanced budged or anything that sounds like prudent spending.

And if one of the Democratic hopefuls has advocated it, I must have missed it.

I hear that. wish I knew how many siblings and spouses of congress people own MIC shares.

And the Iraqi invasion is a result of tampering with the intelligence. Wonder why people who knew what we were being told was bogus never spoke up.

One of the weapons inspectors was on C Span often. He told us they had a record of everything, down to all the part numbers. They could account for all of it. Next thing I knew he was charged with having porn on his government computer. That was bogus, too

Memo to every person concerned with the debt since Trump became POTUS:

Do you know how your House rep and Senators voted on every spending bill since Jan 2017? If you do not, you should. If you do, and you voted for any of them to be reelected in 2018 (if you had the chance withe either Senator), then Trump isn't your problem - you are.

What gets spent only gets signed by the President. He doesn't draft the bill, he doesn't introduce it in the House, he doesn't pass it in the House and move it to the Senate, and he doesn't vote on/pass it in the Senate.

If you haven't held your House rep and Senators accountable - which given their >90% incumbency rates, most of you haven't - then you, the voters, are 100% of the spending problem. Period, the end. And I did and will say the same thing for last and all future Democrat presidents.
