Democrats in Virginia were defeated handily today. House Bill 691 was rejected.

Apparently the newly elected Bloomberg puppets got the message about what would happen.

I still wonder at the damage the Dems have done to themselves with this obvious overreach. VA is LIGHT blue, not dark blue. Drastic over confidence.

Four democrats voted with the republicans.

It's only been tabled for a year. It appears that the bill was poorly written and there is to be another study to narrow the language used and what kind of guns would be considered in this bill.

Quote:
Lawmakers in both the House and Senate have already advanced several other gun-control measures and should finalize passage in the coming days. Those bills include limiting handgun purchases to once a month; universal background checks on gun purchases; allowing localities to ban guns in public buildings, parks and other areas; and a red flag bill that would allow authorities to temporarily take guns away from anyone deemed to be dangerous to themselves or others.embers of his own party balked at the proposal.

According to my search, VA HB 691 concerned the creation of a board to control prescription drug costs, not gun control. If that's the bill you're talking about, it makes the GOP look really bad considering they promised an affordable replacement for Obamacare.

The democrats realized that if they were to pass this and sign it into law it would precipitate a court case that would get to the Supreme Court and result in a ruling that "assault weapons" are in common use for legal purposes and therefore protected by the second amendment. Such a ruling from the S.C. would invalidate all assault weapons bans in existence and make similar future legislation extremely difficult.

Maybe by next year, we'll have another Conservative or two sitting on the Supreme court, and they'll put this matter to rest once and for all.

I believe this will happen. Although it will probably take a second term.

Virginia should serve as a notice for the Democrats that despite throwing piles of money at the "problem" of firearms in the hands of citizens that those citizens are in no way ready to hand over those guns.

The Second amendment was written to prevent overreach by a tyrannical Government and luckily The People spoke loud and clear in Virginia.

It really is scary how close they came to restricting the Rights of good citizens.

I second that!

Does VA have more state elections this year?

Mark Warner almost lost last time around. Maybe his seat will flip.

This is how they roll. It's all political calculations for keeping power, not what's best for policy and the people.
