It was estimated that economic sanctions pushed for by the US (and other countries) caused 500,000 Iraqi children to die...and US official Madeline Albright said it was worth it.
Don't economic sanctions hurt the poor people and not the rich dictator? As the country then has less medicine, food, etc...
I would rather see sanctions then boots on the ground.
If the leaders are squeezed enough the people will rise up in opposition. We were seeing this in Iran a few months ago with all the protests but who knows what happened there because the mass media stopped talking about it in favor of impeachment and now the corona virus.
They stopped talking about it because what was happening in Iran with the protests could be perceived as a win by Trump.
Sanctions pinch a country and the success or failure of them depends on how much the people can take and how far their Government will go to keep them in line. There can come a time as has happened in Cuba and North Korea that the people simply lose the will to fight.
Sanctions do work and they are better than the military option but then again the US shouldn't be sticking its nose into other countries to force them to do something.

Has it hurt Kim Jong Un in North Korea?
Does it hurt the leaders in Iran?
Did it hurt Saddam Hussein?
Think about it... if the country has many who are poor and needy, then they already have issues prior to any sanctions.
Yes - it can hurt the leaders - but it also depends if other entities are helping them on the side.
Not a simple black and white issue...
The Iranian leaders are definitely feeling the heat.
What do you suggest other than economic sanctions... assuming that you wouldn't bomb them either?

It hurt the people of Iraq. Meanwhile, Saddam, reaped in billions from the UN's Oil for Food Program.
Economic sanctions don't always work, but they're often better than the alternatives. They at least make it clear that you have strong objections to the foreign government's behavior and you're willing to put that before your economic interests. Warfare through other means.
Both hurt the poor or every day citizens more than the ruling class....but the sanctions have less impact on our humans.....
BUT at the same time.....we have to be smart about the sanctions.
Are the sanctions effecting change -- if not -- why do them?
