The last time a Republican won either a majority or a plurality of thenational popular vote was back in 2004, when George W. Bush was re-elected nationally by a little over 3 million votes. You have to go back to 1988 and George Herbert Walker Bush’s win over Michael Dukakis to find another. So the Republican nominee has won the national popular vote once in the last 7 times while winning the presidency 3 of the last 7 times through the Electoral College. The historical significance of this is that while 2 of the last 3 Republican wins have occurred despite losing the national popular vote, it’s only happened 4 times in American History, or 5 times if you want to count the election of 1824, when neither Andrew Jackson nor Quincy Adams won the election outright, and Henry Clay sided with Adams when the election moved to the House of Representatives.

2020 is somewhat similar to 2004, in that we have a Republican President who lost the popular vote the first time he ran, running for re-election. In 2004, Bush ran a base election and was able to gin up the Christian conservative vote on social issues. Trump has played to his base since he was first elected, so I fully expect an “us” versus “them” election strategy from him to try to maximize turnout.

Due to the political similarities with 2004, with a Republican running for re-election, this would seem to be the year for the Republicans to sweep the popular vote.....IF as a party they are still capable of winning the popular vote.

So if Trump fails to win the popular vote but still manages to win the electoral college and becomes the first President elected and re-elected while never winning the popular vote, how would you characterize his win?

A “landslide”?

No, it would have to be with an asterisk to delineate it from true historic landslides.

It would be a “Modern Republican Landslide*”.

I don't care about landslides as long as Trump wins. Biden? Bernie? Seriously those are the choices? One is a socialist with a bad ticker and the other is riding Obama's coat tails and losing his mind. They are both blaming Trump for all the problems in America but between the 2 of them they have near 80 years working in the Government. What did they do in all those decades that Trump was able to destroy in 3 years?

America needs Trump today more than ever.

I'm on the fence about a landslide, but the Dems are turning this into a clear loss for them.
I expect Trump & Co. will do very well.
48% of people who actually vote support Trump, and things are looking good in all-important PA.... so, maybe.

Fortunately, the Dems struck out with all the attempts at manufactured hysteria. They'll probably strike out this time, too
They'll blame Trump for a world wide problem and no one will believe them. "Overreach", that's the word.

Like people are going to vote to re-elect a President who has basically destroyed the U.S. economy and kicked off the Second Great Depression.

If this country re-elects this thug, it deserves the 25% unemployment that's coming.

The numbers are somewhat misleading because it has been rare for presidents to even get over 52% in the past few decades. Clinton won with 43% in 1992 and 49.2 in 1996. Obama won with 52.9% and 51.1%. Even Reagan won with only 50.7% in 1980.

The only real landslides in the past 75 or so years have been Ike in 1956 (57.4%), LBJ in 1964 (61.1%), Nixon in 1972 (60.7%), and Reagan in 1984 (58.8). The rest have all been more or less nail-biters. Democrats and Republicans alike. Yes, Trump lost the so-called popular vote, but Hillary did not get to 50% either.

What??

and Bernie or Biden can sweep in and save the planet? Do we even know what Biden is campaigning on beyond beating Trump? Does he even know what he is campaigning on? Bernie on the other hand has laid out his plans for our future and it involves reshaping the country to the standards of Venezuela with free health insurance for all including illegal aliens, free tuition, paying off student loans, yada yada and a free cookie for everyone that votes for him. He also has no plan of how to pay for the estimated 95 trillion dollars it would cost. Raising taxes on us all comes to mind...

Would you rather have the 25% unemployment you fear or would you rather be over run by illegal aliens sporting Bernie 2024 shirts while the rest of us work hard to get no where and we will be going no where because the Green New Deal that Bernie supports is banning the internal combustion engine.

At least if there is another virus outbreak in China in the future all the people on board that slow sail boat will be dead by the time they reach California.

I hope Trump wins because even with all his faults he is the only clear choice for our future.

I don’t know what to call it, but I know one thing: Trump is the only Republican who can pull this off. After Trump, the GOP has some work to do. People like Marco Rubio can not win Michigan or Wisconsin. Ain’t gonna happen.

This forum has been a magnet, drawing in this motley crew of Trump-worshiping, political/sociological misfits. Fortunately, they are nothing more than a tiny faction among our population and have no impact on the outcome of any election. The rest of us need pay them no attention, except to enjoy a bit of humor from their twisted outbursts.
