To rally around a guy that has dementia, they have to believe voters are stupid. And they are right. You are going to nominate a guy with full on dementia to be PRESIDENT.
"...full on dementia..."? Possibly, I don't know. IMO, there is little doubt that the guy is demented to some extent. It seems that many (if not most) democrats are! Just one of the many reasons I will never again vote for ANY democrat.

To be fair, Dem voters indeed tend to be the lower-income earners, even among those with a college education (see chart linked, below). They really aren't all that intelligent or they'd be capable of earning more money.
Not only did Hillary win the bottom 2 income groups while Trump won the top 4 in 2016, but very similar results were noted in the 2012 election:
"An individual’s likelihood of being a Democrat decreases with every additional dollar he or she earns. Democrats have a huge advantage (63 percent) with voters earning less than $15,000 per year. This advantage carries forward for individuals earning up to $50,000 per year, and then turns in the Republicans’ favor — with just 36 percent of individuals earning more than $200,000 per year supporting Democrats."
