I thought Florida was going to be tough on illegal immigration so why did they pass a weak bill that only addresses public hiring, what happened to private companies involved in agriculture.

Quote:
Lawmakers have sent a scaled-back E-Verify bill to Gov. Ron DeSantis that will give Florida businesses the option of using the federal system to verify the immigration status of their workers.
In his 2018 campaign, the Republican governor called for legislation requiring all Florida businesses to the use the E-Verify system. E-Verify is an electronic portal operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that checks job application information against data on store with the Social Security Administration and other federal agencies.
But the bill (SB 664) falls short of DeSantis’ proposal, giving private businesses the option of using E-Verify or confirming an employee’s status through the “I-9 Form” process, which involves documents such as passports or driver’s licenses.

The Republican governor wants E-Verify, but the legislature won't send him that. That's what that says.

So why did a republican controlled congress send such a weak bill. They all say they want strong enforcement but when it comes to really addressing the issue they back off, why is that the case. Same as other states like Texas.

From the article.....

"As our state faces its most challenging public health and economic crisis brought on by Covid-19, GOP lawmakers have instead focused their attention on passing anti-immigrant E-Verify legislation,” the Florida Immigration Coalition tweeted Thursday night".

Oh so now, Florida can't have e-verify due to the Corona Virus? WTH does that have to do with anything? Anti-"immigrant"? Illegal aliens aren't "immigrants"! Illegal aliens have no lawful right to work in our country.

Its not as if the Florida Immigration Coalition has any clout but I do agree one has nothing to do with the other.

The handful of states with mandatory eVerify have intentional loopholes necessary to pass in Republican majority states. It’s all for show.

With less than 5% of global population, the US consumes 36% of global resources. We do not have enough people to produce what we consume. So we import people and product.

Reduce consumption and it all falls apart.

It’s peak strawberry harvesting season moving into tomato season.

There are no limits on seasonal visas for agriculture workers. Nonetheless, there is a strong employer preference for unauthorized workers rather than complying with the terms of legal immigration.

No wall is high enough and no patrol deep enough so long as employers can economically engage unauthorized workers with no consequence.

No way to deport 12 million people.

Its quite obvious this would decimate agriculture in Florida if they had strong enforcement, let the companies raise wages and conditions for workers so they can attract more American workers.

Going the legal route costs more and takes time, and paperwork. Those farmers that go the legal route are at a competitive disadvantage.

Republicans talk constantly about illegal immigration. But are only interested in talking, not actually doing anything.

Mandatory eVerify with stiff employer penalties? Not on your life.

I'm all for e verify with employer penalties including jail, I just wish people would get real and stop acting like it will fix everything.

These people are multiple felons with no regard for our laws. Half our government encourages them. They will still steal identities.
