“However, when the pair asked the manufacturer of the valves for blueprints they could use to print replicas, the company declined and threatened to sue for patent infringement, according to Business Insider Italia. Fracassi and Ramaioli moved ahead anyway by measuring the valves and 3D printing three different versions of them.”
Since lives were at stake, I don't think anyone can blame him. He was faced with a problem, and thanks to his 3D printer, he was able to find a solution and save lives.
One thing that should be considered, in defense of the company that originally made the product... If they invested in the engineering and other expenses incurred bringing this product, or even just this simply valve to life, they deserve to be rewarded for their effort. Businesses fold up and go bye bye if everyone rips off their work for pennies on the dollar. In general, people ripping off the work of others is not cool, but this case is very different and not unethical at all in my opinion.
If it's on the internet it must be true! I find this article somewhat suspicious as the original manufacturer was not mentioned in the article. Wouldn't you think there would be a whole lot of shaming going on?
