Will that be the only way to make people obey the social distancing recommendations?

Look up what Martial Law really is and come back and tell us if that's what you really want?

No. As the illness rate increases, people will self-isolate more and much more willingly.

I didn't say that's what I wanted. I heard an estimate that 2 million people could die in the US.

A report that helped convince Trump to take coronavirus seriously projected that 2.2 million people could die in the US if we don't act

I think there is a legal distinction between these lock-down measures and martial law.

Civil governments at all levels have the legal power to declare states of emergency and attempt to enforce various degrees of restrictions.

First step in enforcement is request for voluntary compliance. Then prohibitions of public gatherings and shutdowns of certain public and private businesses by decree. Then, I suppose, police patrols. Then, State militias.

According to Merriam-Webster, martial law is defined as the law administered by military forces that is invoked by a government in an emergency when the civilian law enforcement agencies are unable to maintain public order and safety.

If governors call in State militias, then I suppose that is some degree a martial law. I believe it is already occurring in a small area of Westchester County NY to a small degree.

Many municipalities, counties and States have already declared emergencies and have decreed lock-downs of almost all public gatherings and non-essential businesses. Many have not.

The federal government could decree a nation-wide lock-down of all non-essential businesses and public gatherings, but so far at that level all we have are voluntary recommendations that many lower-level governmental entities are already implementing, some by voluntary recommendation, some by legal decree.

The United States are a Constitutional system of checks and balances, and after some 250 years it still works quite beautifully.

It is the political parties that are sick and moribund.

I could imagine the federal government decreeing martial law if we were to experience rioting or other severe disturbances in more than one locale that State militias cannot contain.

I do not believe that we are anywhere near that point and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Checks and balances, then.

All the best!

Martial Law? no way. even if the crisis rose to that level I couldn't stand the Lefty medias hype that Trump only declared it so he could stop the election as a way to stay in office and promote himself to god emperor....

People just need to be smart to keep themselves safe but sadly many are not so they might need some type of lock down to protect them from themselves but if Trump is in charge the Left will complain about it.

doesn't really matter whether or not it should, chances are getting much more likely that it will.

Not sure how a military government would improve things.

Emergency powers are being passed in many countries however that's a different thing to total military control.
