Then there is the simple matter that so far, there have been no proper clinical trials evaluating hydroxychloroquine, whereas Remdesivir has shown good, not tremendous, but good - results in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind, highly powered study.
Hydroxychloroquine does have known issues with a side effect of modulating ion channels involved in heart muscle regulation, and it's believed to have a narrow therapeutic window* for Covid-19 as a result.

Hydroxychloroquine did not produce great results in most studies, and although better the anti viral Remdesivir results werebetter they were hardly startling.
Scientists are continuing to research other anti-virals such as interferon beta, as well as blood plasma treatments.
