Some politicians and the press are making the police unions out to be the ones who prevent police policy reform. They’re attacking the police unions regularly now. But the politicians are Democratic Party and the majority of the press are also supporters of the Democratic Party. Both groups are normally proud supporters of unions. Police union political donations regularly go to majority Democratic Party campaigns. Have the DNC finally found a Union they oppose? Will the rank and file police in the country and the unions that represent them now stop supporting DNC candidates in elections? One of the things conservatives have seen as a negative with unions is they make it more difficult to get rid of bad employees, especially if there’s a family connection to the industry and union. When it comes to police they do need extra protection to defend themselves from false claims made against them. They need this protection more than any other unionized field today.
So will the DNC actively try to get rid of police unions? Will police unions stop giving DNC campaign contributions? Will other unions stand behind the police unions in support?
So among the frequently cited allegations is that police unions fight to protect bad cops. Given that one of the downsides of unions generally is that many fight to protect all employees, including those with bad, even really bad conduct, I don't find this hard to believe about the police union at all. Unions are definitely a mixed bag. They're not all bad, but they're not all good either.
The police union isn’t bad. Just needs to do less for bad cops.
The country could also use a national database for police outfits to access to keep track of bad cops. It’s too easy for them to just move on elsewhere.
