New York has the second highest death rate in the country after New Jersey? Yeah, quite the laugh.
Right but NY started off really bad when it was the epicenter. It's no doubt been trending up, and I'm sure if you look at total death rate, it may be bad, but you look at those stats after it was the epicenter, how does it fare? I honestly don't know the answer, but I don't know it would be near the top.
In other words, NY dug itself in such a big hole to begin with that it may always look like it's the worst if you're just looking at total numbers. But you are correct that currently, it's trending in the top 5 worst; with Michigan obviously being the worst state:

Amazing how NYC has had a 98% drop in cases, ND is down well over 90% from their peak.
California meanwhile is turning into Brazil. Gavin Newsom has turned into Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro on COVID-19 the last several weeks and decided to do a complete 180 degree turn.
California is in complete economic meltdown and the governor knows it so despite skyrocketing cases he decided to become the biggest COVID-19 opener the world has ever seen over the course of a week.
Interesting, how California is in such a state of economic collapse that the governor when the May 2020 job numbers came out that Newsom decided to basically emulate Arizona and President Trump.
I wonder if California will turn into a massive public health disaster in the next couple of weeks because Gavin Newsom changed his mind and decided to emulate Bolsonaro/Trump over night and opened up a vast majority of businesses last Friday.
Los Angeles is near the top of any city in the world on COVID-19 currently. Seems like lately well over 2,000 cases per day and they have a "Social Welfare" doctor running the public health department.
New York did many shameful things over the response, but at least they have public health people who seem to at least have an idea about how viruses work.
Los Angeles on the under hand has a "Social Welfare" doctor who has no idea about how viruses work coordinating her response which is a complete fiasco.
They locked too much too long. They should let the virus run it's course with special precautions for the most vunerable which was obviously fairly early.
Most flus run their course without lockdowns, mass vaccinations etc. Those that had natural immunity or could make it through kill off many a disease, maybe that natural progression was ment to be.
All the lockdowns restrictions etc not only slowed a more natural process but it put groups of people in contact with others they normally would've had no business with. Many businesses tried or pushed everyone into limited schedule for example. Running fewer buses and trains puts more on the same route, time etc.
Can't cowar, hide forever. If one is scared or high risk all the precautions should be geared toward them.

Yeah it is horrific.
This isn't a contest. States were hit at different times, have different factors influencing.
NEw York, New Jersey & Massachutes too got hit hard in the first wave -- harder than anywhere. So much was unknown.
Some place like Mississippi is seeing a higher 7 day average of deaths than it did at the start of the pandemic.
With all we know, with the vaccine --- it shouldn't be higher than a year ago -- and it is.
Oklahoma isn't a state that sees a whole bunch of commuter traffic from other states or lots of international travel. It should be substantially lower in rates of cases and death -- almost nothing really. Once we determined how easily it was spread -- if your state was at a low point - -it should have stayed that way.
Oklahoma -- 7 day average for deaths -- 9....They hit their highpoint beginning of March at 56. WHAT? Why?
My county alone on the other side of NYS had around 530 new cases yesterday alone.
