A professor at a San Francisco Bay Area community college has been put on leave after asking a Vietnamese-American student to “Anglicize” her name because it sounds like a vulgarity in English, school officials confirmed.
Laney College President Tammeil Gilkerson said that as soon as campus leaders learned of the comments, an unnamed faculty member was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, the East Bay Times reported.
Imagine if someone comes up to you and say, "Hey (insert name), your name is pretty offensive. Can you change it? Preferably to one from a list of names that we use to name our children."
That's offensive on a level I didn't think possible from a teacher. What a piece of work.

I googled how to pronounce it. This is a really cutely done video, and apparently it's kind of like "Fope".
The professor should have learned how to say it, and moved on. If he was worried about having to call on her in class, it would be uncomfortable if it were pronounced the way it looks to us.
