Eleanor Roosevelt was a supporter of Civil Rights and yet FDR turned his back on Blacks every given moment. Was he racist or just playing politics? It seems he followed his cousin Theodore Roosevelt methodology in dealing with race relations. Because Theodore received some backlash from southern whites when he invited Booker T Washington in the White House. Afterwards Teddy had a more of a gradual tread lightly approach when dealing with Blacks. Thus, it looks like FDR learned from this. Because he refused to invite the Olympian Jesse Owens to the White House. FDR had no problem inviting white Olympians but he refused to invite Jesse Owens who won 4 gold medals? Incredible.
FDRs Executive Order 9066 threw over 100,000 Americans in prison, without due process, based on ethnicity. His actions prove he was a racist with the power to exercise that racism.
Judged from the standards of today, of course, there is much we can criticize about FDR and his actions (or lack of action) on civil rights.
That said, it would be foolish to say he did nothing positive. The following are a few key points:
1. FDR appointed a far greater number of blacks to positions of responsibility within his government than any of his predecessors, so much so in fact that this group became known as the “Black Cabinet†or “Black Brain Trust†in the press.
2. FDR was also the first president to appoint an African American as a federal judge; to promote a black man to the rank of Brigadier General in the Army; and, incredible as it might seem, the first president to publicly call lynching murder — “a vile form of collective murderâ€-which W.E B. Dubois applauded as something that sadly was long overdue.
3. Overall FDR’s administration tripled the number of Africa Americans working for the federal government, including thousands of black engineers, architects, lawyers, librarians, office managers, and other professionals.
4. By 1935, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was employing approximately 350,000 African Americans annually, about 15% of its total workforce.
5. Under FDR's leadership, and with the strong support of Eleanor Roosevelt, the Democrats included the first specific African American plank in the party platform at the 1936 convention.
Every group has racists. The republicans don't back them and elect them to positions of authority. Sooner or later they get outed.

George Wallace would have won the democratic primary in 1972 but he was shot and didn't campaign the last 1/3 including California. He lost the popular vote by less than 3 points.

The woke left will know about the dirty things FDR has done to many Americans. FDR has done a couple of sins in the eyes of the SJW, black thought leaders and academics. For he FDR placed Japanese Americans in interiment camps for the duration of World War 2. Also when FDR was President, when America's population was spreading westward to California. Americans started to settle in lands that were historically Mexican, or Mexican owned. Mexican Americans who were born on U.S land were deported to Mexico even though they were born on U.S Soil. Last FDR New Deal did not assist black people initially.
If you are one of these types of social Justice and academics. Your best bet is to call for the removal of FDR face on Mount Rushmore and have it replaced with Kimberle Crenshaw, Tana Hesi Coates, Linda Sasour, Gloria Steinem.
New Deal did not help blacks. The New Deal did not start to help blacks until later on the in the 1930s.
