The sad part is most everyone bought it hook, line and sinker, or if they didn't they were browbeaten into silent agreement by the media, Democrats and even RINOS. Oh OK boss no good conservatives there .

No, and the racists I've known would never harm you either. They might not want to live near you, but they'd never go out of their way to even hurt your feelings as long as you were a respectful member of the community.

Would they accept me better if they knew I was Indian and not African American or would the accept me even if I was African American but not a "stereotypical thug" and a law abiding hard working citizen?

I tend to think that they would eventually accept you. One racist I knew had issues with me being married to an American born Japanese man, at first, but eventually got used to the idea and even looked forward to meeting my husband.

I think those couple idiots might have gave you a complex. Even they most likely knew you weren't African.
Most people are going to be more accepting if they know you're not going to be trouble, whatever the race. But there exists resentment from a constant stream of immigration for decades while diversity is used as a cudgel to beat Americans over the head. I can't imagine anywhere in the world the population would be okay with being done to like that.
