I just want to know everyone's thoughts on this one question.
Would we be this divided as a nation if social media did not exist (meaning anything from My Space to Facebook to Twitter to Tik Tok)?
I personally think that we would still have the sharp divides due to the combo of the pandemic, unequal recovery of the 2008 recession, and a more diverse population but not enough education to appreciate those differences. The divides weren't created by social media but the algorithm based nature of social media makes it easy to create echo chambers and up until a few years ago, you need this sense of I can post whatever I want to without any real consequences. That helps fan those flames.
