Ouch.

Governor Mike DeWine has been more "liberal" in handling this pandemic than nearly all of his Republican peers but this one still has to sting the base. He seemed to be going a bit more conservative in recent weeks holding out on a mask mandate but has now caved.

Makes no sense.

Ohio's current R0 is under 1.0 (it's .98) signaling herd immunity.

Its .98 signalling a likely coming slow decline.

Ohios numbers while not awesome seem to be trending in a good way.

Typically herd immunity is under 1.0.

Seasonal influenza is 1.2-1.6.

This is not "highly" contagious.

Also, Indiana just got onboard w/ a mask mandate as well.

There should be a federal mask mandate until we get the virus under control in this country, which we are nowhere near right now. But that would require courage and leadership from the top, and that's never going to happen with this administration.

There is no herd immunity here. Under 1 just means that it's not spreading as fast currently. Maybe he is seeing some trend we're not?

I like this site for its emphasis on past 7 days. April is not all that relevant now.

Transmission rate doesn't reflect herd immunity. It just indicates whether spread is rising, flat, or falling.

Here's some realtime data on Ohio.

Its not a liberal vs conservative issue, politicians are just listening to our medical experts instead of linking this pandemic to our pathetic divisive political culture.
