Virginia has never been part of the deep south. It was the only former member of the CSA not to institute debt/peonage slavery after the War. For those not familiar with it, mostly black men, but some women and children and a few whites were picked up for minor crimes or bogus charges, and, not being able to pay the fines and fees were forced to work them off by being leased by the government to businesses which ranged from farms, to railroads to industries. The system was not abolished until the 1940's.
Judge ruled today that the huge statue of Lee in Richmond can come down. He also issued a restraint on the removal to give the plaintiffs the right to appeal. Frankly, I am surprised, yet pleased at the ruling. Since the court which made the ruling is the court of record, its difficult to see what the grounds of appeal would be. Driving down Monument Ave. last week for the first time since the statues came down, it had a feeling of lightness and not as one writer said of Monument Ave, the banana belt of snuffed generals.
Of course not. But it was THE SOUTH. Generals. President , Capital, Armies.....It was the ruler of the South.
