Imprisoning people who sell drugs does not reduce the drug supply, increase drug prices, or prevent drug use. As Mark Kleiman, a highly-regarded drug policy expert, has explained, “We did the experiment. In 1980, we had about 15,000 people behind bars for drug dealing. And now we have about 450,000 people behind bars for drug dealing. And the prices of all major drugs are down dramatically. So if the question is do longer sentences lead to higher drug prices and therefore less drug consumption, the answer is no....
Policymakers should urgently reform all criminal laws and sentencing guidelines that result in disproportionate punishments for people convicted of drug selling- or distribution-related law violations. This includes reforming criminal history sentencing enhancements, expanding safety valve provisions, and eliminating mandatory minimum sentences. They should also repeal drug-induced homicide laws.
I blame the manufacturers and those who enable the drugs to be made first. All the corruption surrounding the drug trade, and then the big dealers, then the smaller dealers. Doctors should not have handed oxy out like candy to anyone who came in. That was huge. I feel bad for people who got addicted to prescription oxy for pain and now cannot get the drug to even control pain.
There is plenty of blame to go around for the drug problems in society.
Whatever you think here, nobody can say that anything that government or law enforcement has done about it has yielded any results, and have in fact probably made the problem worse.
