Even though Newsweek is reporting this, they are basing this information on "Citing ambassadors, unnamed foreign officials, and experts, Newsweek reported Sunday", So this is speculation

I'm pretty convinced that China purposely released covid 19 onto the world in a desperate play to take out Trump and make him look like a failed leader in an election year. A country of their size and they only have 86,000 cases while we have over 9 million. It doesn't add up.

Just wanted to stop in to say that one of my friends here in China who's a university teacher said a couple days ago, when it looked like Trump had won, that a number of his college-aged students were gloating and telling him that this was "a great win for China." Trump sowed so much chaos in global geopolitics that they were of the opinion that it would benefit China as the US slid further into decline.
