Which countries have the most Covid-19 cases per day, per person?

Larger countries get more cases, obviously. If Country A is three times the population of Country B, and Country A is getting three times as many Covid cases, then they are actually about neck-and-neck. So the graph below, shows how many cases per million population, which levels the playing field.

Simple day-by-day graphs tend to look pretty spiky, with the middle of each week a lot higher than weekends. Possibly because hospitals have smaller crews on the weekend, and those reduced staffs would rather spend their time taking care of patients than filling out papers and making reports. So their reports of new Covid cases that come in on a weekend, might wait until Monday or Tuesday to be reported. This website has a way of "smoothing" the data, possibly by averaging the day's count with the previous six. I think.

Data is from a group called "Our World in Data", or OWID for short. They update their database daily. This is from yesterday's database, current through Nov. 16, 2020.

I was going to list the top ten larger countries, but missed Poland for some reason, whose case count is in the middle of the pack shown here. Western countries seem to have the highest counts of Covid cases per day, especially in the last month or two.

The United States actually comes out near the bottom of this group.

So is Sweden, which has done ZERO mandatory mask wearing, lockdowns, govt-forced reductions in group sizes etc. The Swedish govt seems to expect their citizens to be smart enough to do what is necessary themselves, without needing a government to hold their hand and guide them through it as the U.S. does, punishing when they don't obey.

BTW, while the United State (pop. 331 million) averages around 100,000 new infections per day, China with a population of 1.3 billion, and the original source of Covid-19, claims to average approx. 30-40 new infections per day. I find that very hard to believe. But I know of no evidence refuting it. I have heard that when China locks down, they LOCK DOWN. You have more freedom in jail.

So they say.

OTOH, when the virus first got going in early Spring, their version of a "lockdown" was to grab everybody who even LOOKED like he had a respiratory problem, and drag him off to solitary hospitals and keep him there, whether he (or his family or friends) liked it or not. And they would station army troops with weapons at their apartment block, and not let ANYBODY walk out the door, like for a month or three.

They would hand out special passes - but very few of them. Enough to let maybe one person per hallway, out one time a week, and then only to go to the army truck parked outside to get their ration of food for the week. If you used your pass too many times, tough luck, you went hungry. Get back inside your apartment NOW. See you in a week. (in cities, nearly all of the population lives in govt-provided apartments.)

They would lock down entire cities this way, starting with Wuhan (pop. 11 million), and spreading to other cities. You couldn't get on a bus or train without an even-more-special pass, and there were VERY few of those.

It's a lot easier to govern a country without the consent of the governed. Easier for the bosses, anyway. And a very large army helps.

Also makes me wonder if they have quietly developed a vaccine of their own, and aren't talking about it. I also have no evidence of that, except for the claims they've made about incredibly low rates of infections.

Interesting graphic - but Sweden did more than most people think they did. To say they're doing nothing is just flat out wrong - now and back then.
