Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame today tweeted a list of 21 GOP U.S. Senators who despise President Trump but who refuse to publicly criticize Trump.

<<The 21 GOP Senators who have privately expressed their disdain for Trump are: Portman, Alexander, Sasse, Blunt, Collins, Murkowski, Cornyn, Thune, Romney, Braun, Young, Tim Scott, Rick Scott, Rubio, Grassley, Burr, Toomey, McSally, Moran, Roberts, Shelby. (2/3)

— Carl Bernstein (@carlbernstein) November 23, 2020

"Craven Repub silence is now enabling a Mad King in the Final Days of his reign to scorch the earth of his country to bring down the whole system, sabotaging USA and its people thru madness of his tweets & willingness to undermine the electoral system at heart of our democracy," Bernstein tweeted.>>

This statement is accurate whether or not any Senator privately despises President Trump.

<<“With few exceptions, their craven public silence has helped enable Trump’s most grievous conduct — including undermining and discrediting the U.S. electoral system,” he tweeted late Sunday.>>

Trump's latest "Big Lie" is that there was pervasive fraud in this election and that the Republican/Trump nominees who now dominate the Supreme Court will hand Trump the "election" much as it decided the Presidential election in George W. Bush's favor in 2000.

Somehow, Trump's supporters fail to understand that 1) NO state today was won by just several hundred votes, as was the case with Florida in 2000; 2) the election does not hinge on the outcome of a single state as in 2000; and 3) there is not a specific, credible issue that muddies the vote count in even one contested, decisive state, such as the "hanging chad" controversy in Florida in 2000.

Even the Republican attorneys who represented Bush in 2000 explain that the legal issue in Florida in 2000 was real and ascertainable, not the fraudulent, even comical challenges of the Trump campaign which have been rejected, even ridiculed, in state and federal courts.

<<A federal judge has dismissed the Trump campaign's Pennsylvania lawsuit attempting to overturn the 2020 election, issuing a stinging opinion that blasts the president's legal team for a filing a disjointed lawsuit that lacked a compelling legal argument or factual proof to support it.

U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Brann wrote that he would not "disenfranchise almost seven million voters," as the Trump campaign had sought.

"One might expect that when seeking such a startling outcome, a plaintiff would come formidably armed with compelling legal arguments and factual proof of rampant corruption," Brann wrote. "That has not happened."

Ted Olsen, one of the nation's most acclaimed Constitutional and election law attorneys and who victoriously argued for Bush before the Supreme Court, over a week ago said that Biden won. Olsen subsequently served as Solicitor General under Bush.

<<Speaking at an event for the conservative
Federalist Society on Thursday, Ted Olson said that he believes "the election is over" and that America has "a new president."

"The Framers, they separated the powers because they knew that individuals would be flawed. They put in lots of checks, and we just experienced one, the election," Olson said.

"To the extent that the citizens of this country did not like the manner in which President Trump spoke, or the manner in which he threatened people or the manner in which he executed the laws, they exercised their franchise.">>

<<“There’s not a lot of similarities,” said attorney Barry Richard, who represented Bush in the 2000 saga. “In 2000, there was clearly a problem with the defective ballots. Nobody was claiming fraud or improprieties. It was all about how we made sure everybody’s vote counted....”

“I have read everything. I have looked at all the claims. None of them raise anything,” Richard said. “None of them have any credible evidence. It has to affect enough votes to change the result of the election.”>>

<<"Florida was about one breathtakingly close state," said Ben Ginsberg, who helped lead the legal strategy for Bush around the 2000 Florida recount. "This is nothing like that."

There's also the fact that Biden has a very significant lead in the popular vote, likely about FOUR PERCENTAGE POINTs IN THE POPULAR VOTE when the election is finally certified in all states. Gore defeated Bush by only 1/2 percent of the popular vote in 2000. To some extent, the Supreme Court is a political institution and it is beyond imagination that it will even entertain any challenges from the Trump administration in the absence of PROVEN improprieties in the lower courts that could change the outcome of the election. Although it has no legal impact given the U.S. outmoded electoral college system, Biden's decisive popular vote victory will be the hidden elephant in the Supreme Court chambers as the justices deliberate whether to accept any Trump challenge to the electoral outcome.

I think it's sad and a little bit funny that Republican representatives are so desperate to please Trump's base of toothless, beer-bellied idiots - granted, there are a lot of them - and those votes are so coveted.

The karma is gonna be interesting for all involved.
