Nah, I have to give these folks some credit, this was a pretty slick piece of work. If they had enough folks to exploit this, or managed to heavily automate it they may have amassed a VAST amount of data. To the point that they may have had to be selective about what they took in order to avoid detection based on network usage. Probably could have duplicated every single email exchange in the middle if they wanted. And then traversed every drive on the network, and selectively copied a few thousand.

Or maybe they were ultra cautious and slower, either way....theyve had the ability to future proof themselves buy opening other vulnerabilities. And of course skill level. So far the skill level seem pretty darn high!

This sort of thing allows for some more terrifying scenarios then folks might realize. And a intelligence nightmare.

Because one thing were pretty darn sure of is that the number of votes, and the votes counted are one and the same. No one so far has alleged that systems were hacked with any evidence, because the reality is we've audited these results, and theres a paper trail for the places using these systems. In 2016 no one disputed that with these systems. Nothings changed since then. Lots of allegations that turn out to be utter nonsense.

But we've also clearly said that the Russians are still trying to influence our elections. And that's still true today. And they're doing some unacceptable things to do this. We need to treat them for what they are, and either return the favor, or escalate until they're willing to agree that maybe things are going too far. Because that's the only way we will start getting things working better. Disrupting each others governments need to become mutually assured failures. MAD worked. Say what you will, it still is. Maybe we need to enter this fight instead of taking the punches. And then agree to stop when its clear its not beneficial to either side. Cause just letting things slide isn't working.
