Millions have lost jobs and small businesses have had to close for good. Cars are lined up for miles in food banks because they can't feed their families. They can't afford to pay their rent. Many have lost their healthcare. They didn't ask for the mess we are in but they are hurting and need help. How do you consider this a welfare handout.

The intent of the stimulus is to stimulate the economy.

A qualifying family of 4 could receive $5200, if the stand alone bill were to pass the Senate. It is more tax free money than many have ever had. Nothing compels the funds to be used to pay back rent and they continue to be allowed to squat.

There is no way for some to ever pay back rent. This is going to get real ugly down the road.

I want ALL people to work and earn their keep in their lives. Why should anyone, who is able-bodied, expect or be entitled to others financing their lifestyles and worthless lives? I loathe freeloading, welfare-sucking losers who are completely able to work and provide for themselves but don't want to and won't. They are a complete waste of oxygen.

It would be different (and fair) if it was a percentage refund of your 2019 federal tax. Let’s say 10%, so households who paid $30k in federal tax get $3k, those who paid $3k in federal tax get $300, those who paid nothing in federal tax get nothing. That is how you return money to taxpayers.

This is not returning money to tax payers. Those who pay the most taxes get nothing and those who pay no taxes get the greatest benefit. This is how welfare works. This “stimulus” is nothing more than widespread welfare.

The stimulus check is based on your income.

I understand.

Most people however have not lost their jobs or businesses and continue to pay their bills. Those on fixed incomes, SS and pensions are at no risk of missing a pay day.

I don’t track the lines at make shift food banks. Do people not qualify for SNAP? I know it’s not much but it helps. A box or 2 of Mac and cheese can feed a family of 4., leaving $15 +/- for cereal, peanut butter, beans, eggs, milk, tuna, bananas, apples, netc.

I don’t track blowing a tank of gas waiting in lines for hours for a box of random food.

Once unemployment within a state or a region of a state exceeds X, the state can qualify for an exemption to the work rule thing. Most states sought and were granted exemption forcing the Great Recession.

What am I missing?

For the love of Peter and Paul. Really? The answer is--learn to depend on and provide for yourself. A reasonable adult should be able to figure out that unforeseen circumstances happen in life and you should plan well in advance for that time to come. And, yet, all these weak American adults, many of whom live well beyond their means, are begging the government (read: me and other self-sufficient taxpayers) for welfare handouts. It's utterly shameful.

And, your comment re "cars are lined up for miles in food banks," look at the size of those adults in those cars (read: not underfed) and the nicer, newer cars they're driving, which evidently, they can't afford. Stop blaming others for your unwillingness to finance your own lifestyle and stop looking to others to pay for your reckless spending habits.

Stand on your own two feet, not on top on mine.

No, it's welfare.

Let the entire economy tank and the pieces, businesses and people fall where they may. Then, people will either rebuild or they will not--natural selection.

Plot twist: OP now identifies as a big business and/or foreign country.
