He's absolutely right.
Cut back on red meat, dairy, junk foods, and soda.
Up your movement.
Voila', you'll drop or maintain your weight.
Oh, and put the fork down. Reasonable portions are key.

It also helps to change the "taste".
Americans eat a lot of sweet food. If you go to Japan, sugar consumption is much lower, largely because people are not addicted to that taste.
Also, drinks are not supposed to be sweet, unless for special purposes.
There is no need to use dairy products everywhere either. Burgers and pastas taste good without cheese.

that's interesting, in contrast to this list done just a year earlier
PS - let's be kind and agree to disagree on cheeseburgers and a reasonable amount of cheese on pasta.
I think the method is problematic:
"The United Arab Emirates takes first place with 213 kilograms per person, which is approximately 53,591 teaspoons. Per day that works out to be 147 teaspoons per person on average. "
Nobody can consume 147 teaspoons of sugar per day.
Government is not forcing people to consume more calories than they burn. That’s personal choice and behavior.
Quite possible to live your life without high fructose corn syrup and I say this as someone with a life long addiction to soda pop. I have the equivalent of a Mercedes in my mouth as a result of my lousy choices.
Let’s own our choices and consequences.
My long departed grandfather used to say that my mother had the equivalent of a Mercedes in her mouth (he thought the dentist took advantage, but he still paid. And, over time, it was way more than the cost of the dentist’s Mercedes....hence the reference).
I have read and heard a lot about "food deserts" in poor urban areas. I can see how difficult it might be to live in a food desert, especially if you rely on mass transportation to get around, and if you're working multiple jobs to make ends meet. When you're exhausted and stressed, you opt for cheap convenience that is readily available to you.
Yeah sure, it's a "choice" to not make the extra effort to eat healthier. But I can't say that I wouldn't be doing exactly the same thing if I was in that situation.
Many of those "food deserts" were caused by last years riots.
