You take one hostage (a Pence or a Pelosi...not one of us lowly peons mind you) and now they have a bargaining chip or at least possibly a symbol to activate their peers across the country.
The idea was to win hearts and minds to build momentum.

Just because Trump was smart enough to not officially get his hands dirty doesn't mean he wasn't pleased with what happened. Reports had him happy as a clam during the siege.
