I'm not offended, even though generally I don't believe in interfering with nature. This kind of a cold wave is unique.
A side story. In March 1973, when I was 15 and about two months after my father died, my mother and grandmother took to Sonesta Beach Hotel in the Bahamas. Which I think is now the Melia Resort. My mother and grandmother decided to go shopping in downtown Nassau, about 2 miles or so away. I took one look at the available shopping and decided I'd be dreadfully bored.
I knew from prior reading in National Geographic that they sold turtle soup at the local zoo, so I asked to take a side trip there. I went to the bus terminal in Nassau and quickly figured out that the timing wouldn't work. I'd have to take a bus to the zoo and then double-back into town to catch a bus back to the hotel. I thus returned to the hotel, changed my clothes and went to play tennis with a girl I had met and her brother. I forgot to leave a note in the room and cell phones didn't exist then. Needless to say my mother and grandmother were furious when they came back and couldn't find me. Finally my mother stuck up for me (a rare moment) by pointing out that I did leave my street clothes on the bed, meaning I was engaged somewhere in athletic activities, either in the water or playing tennis. And to this day I never have had turtle soup.
I did not disappear and 46 years later I am not dead. Nor, since I never got the soup, is another turtle.
Regarding them being cold blooded, I think that term is a misnomer because it suggests that the optimal temperature for the organism is relatively cold. They are actually ectothermic, which means that they don't have any internal thermoregulation like we do, their body temperature matches that of their environment, hence turtles basking when it is warm, and seeking cooler temps when it is cold.
I don't know the specifics about this sea turtle species, but I read some articles after reading the OP on this thread and it looks like there is concern about them being stunned by the very low water temperatures, and dying because they cannot swim or surface for air.
Bottom line for me and just my opinion, but if people are willing to volunteer their time to do something beneficial, and they have the time and resources, why not do it?
Yes. And it's not just progressives, the entire State of Florida has a Sea turtle program funded by Republican Governers Bush, Scott, and DeSantis.
Republicans like nature too you know.
Yes, because we have nothing else more important to worry about. Sea turtles could disappear tomorrow and nobody would notice.
I doubt the fishermen out in the Gulf scooping up turtles are taking time away from curing cancer or solving world hunger.
